Last year I became obsessed with setting up little routines for myself. You can read more about how to start a morning routine when you are not a morning person here and nighttime routine ideas when you work regular business hours here. Every so often I like to switch up these routines and I think it makes sense to do this when the seasons change. This post is all about my healthy spring morning routine.

Here in the midwest our winter was pretty brutal and it honestly felt like it would last forever. As I'm writing this in early May, it's still pretty cold and gloomy most days. About a month ago I was feeling in a total slump with my mood, how my clothes were fitting, and just how I felt overall. I decided I wanted to get in a healthy routine for spring and it was time to switch up my morning routine.
In this post I am sharing how I switched up my morning routine to get myself out of the winter blues.
The first thing I did was adjust my sleep schedule.
My body naturally feels ready to wake up between 7 and 7:30, so I gave up on trying to force myself to be out of bed by 6 am. I personally feel more productive at night, so I'd rather stay up late than try to wake up early. It's so important to figure out what sleep schedule works for YOU rather than try to conform to what society tells us is productive. I noticed that when I slept in past 6 (which honestly happened most days) I automatically felt like such a failure first thing in the morning. In reality, I wasn't allowing myself enough hours to sleep because I was staying up all night working on my blog. Now, I try to force myself to put work away at night to make sure I'm getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep with a 7 - 7:30 wake up time.
WAKE UP PEACEFULLY
I've talked about my alarm clock several times on my blog, but it's truly a game changer when it comes to my morning routine. There is truly nothing worse than waking up to a harsh alarm that immediately puts you into fight or flight and this one does the complete opposite! I love that it gradually wakes you up with light that mimics a sunrise and has several options for peaceful alarm sounds.
MORNING SKINCARE
If you're like me and wake up looking puffy with under eye bags, you should try giving yourself a lymphatic drainage facial massage! I recently started this after learning how to do it from TikTok videos, and it really does make a huge difference! Plus, it's relaxing to take a few minutes in the morning to give yourself a little self care before taking on the day. I apply my DIY glow serum before doing my lymphatic drainage facial massage to ensure that I'm not pulling on my skin and causing wrinkles. Make sure to drink water after you do this to help flush the toxins out of your lymph nodes!
HYDRATE
Speaking of drinking water in the morning, your body gets extremely dehydrated while you are sleeping so it's important to hydrate first thing in the morning. One way to get in the habit of drinking water first thing in the morning is to put a cold glass of water on your nightstand before bed. My favorite water bottles that keep water cold overnight are this one and this one.
SET THE TONE FOR THE DAY
One of my morning routine rituals is filling my essential oil diffuser. I love using uplifting scents that smell good and put me in a happy mood. In the springtime I am constantly diffusing lemon, lavender, and peppermint to help combat seasonal allergies.
Shop my favorite essential oils that are safe and actually do more than just smell good here.
GET YOUR MIND RIGHT
This time of year is always so rainy and gloomy and it can easily make you feel seriously depressed. I can be pretty inconsistent with journaling but I've been trying to make it a priority during my spring morning routine to help with my mental health. I just write literally whatever is on my mind - my to-do list for the day, things that are annoying me, or things that I want to accomplish. It is seriously one of my favorite parts of my day and I always feel better after I do it. Plus, it's fun to go back and read later!
FUEL YOUR BODY
Over the winter I got into a really bad habit of skipping breakfast or just eating a snack bar and drinking coffee until lunch. This spring I started a workout routine (more on that below) and it's forced me to be better about my nutrition. I started making a coffee smoothie for breakfast and it's been the perfect way to fuel my body in the morning while simultaneously getting a little caffeine boost, which is perfect for my pre workout!
Coffee Smoothie Recipe:
- frozen banana
- spinach
- chocolate protein power
- chia seeds
- coffee
- milk
MOVE YOUR BODY / GET FRESH AIR & SUNSHINE
Another focus of my healthy spring morning routine is exercise! I recently started taking barre fitness classes and I am absolutely loving it! On my drive to my workout I listen to an inspiring podcast or my worship music playlist. When I get home it's a little warmer out so I take my dogs around the block to get some fresh air and extra vitamin D!
PLAN YOUR DAY
The last step of my healthy morning routine is to sit down and plan out the rest of my day. If you don't have a plan of when you will complete important tasks for the day, you will likely become distracted and lose track of time. I try to plan my entire week each Sunday, but daily I will sit down and rearrange things as needed.
