This post is all about how to style sectional pillows, sectional pillow arrangement ideas, and things to look for when purchasing pillow covers and pillow inserts.
Styling pillows on a sectional can be a real challenge. I know this because I have spent so much money on pillows until I figured out the perfect pillow arrangement for a sectional sofa. In an attempt to help prevent you from making the same mistakes, I have put together all of the pillow styling tips I have learned along the way. This post is all about how to style pillows on a sectional.

Tip 1: Choose a color palette for your throw pillows
When deciding on a color palette, I knew I wanted to bring in warm tones that would contrast out cool-toned grey sectional. I also wanted to stick with mostly neutral colors so I could easily switch out seasonal accent pillows. I started with the color beige, which happened to match our velvet curtains. From there I added in browns, creams, and light pink as the accent color. When deciding on an accent color, look around your home and pay attention to the colors of your favorite decor items. You might want to choose a less obvious accent color for your pillows to pull out other subtle accent colors in your home.
Tip 2: Buy pillow inserts in different sizes and shapes
I recommend placing your largest pillows in each corner of your sectional. I put the same 24×24 inch pillows in each corner and treat these as “bookends” to ground the couch. Many designers recommend styling your couch with all different pillows for a high-end look, but I think having 2 or 3 of the same pillows makes the sofa look less busy. My smaller square pillows are each 20×20 inches and I like to sprinkle in rectangle and circle pillows too. I recommend purchasing feather pillow inserts because they are easier to fluff and more comfortable. These can be somewhat expensive, but if you find a comfortable pillow at Target or TJ Maxx, you can always cut off the cover and put the insert in a cuter one!
Tip 3: Buy pillow covers with different textures
The pillow covers on our sectional are in different textures including velvet, linen, and cotton. Using different textures adds dimension and interest to your throw pillows, even if you are using similar shapes. My favorite place to find affordable pillow covers is H&M. They have so many unique color options and trendy patterns. I linked all of the pillow covers we have on our sectional here.
Tip 4: Don’t overcrowd your couch
As much as I love throw pillows, I do think it’s possible to overcrowd your couch with too many pillows. You don’t want it to look like there’s no room to sit on your sofa. I like to layer throw pillows in the corners and place a long lumbar pillow on the in-between cushions. This leaves enough room to sit on the sectional and lounge on the pillows or move them away for extra space.
Tip 5: Add a throw blanket
A throw blanket is the final touch to styling your sectional! I folded my favorite weighted blanket over the end of the chaise but you could also throw a light blanket over the back of the couch or draped on the arm rest. A throw blanket just makes your sectional look even cozier and lived-in. It’s like the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae!
