How To Be a Good Party Host
1. Set the ambiance of your home
Here are a few things to consider when creating an ambiance for your party:
Use lamps, battery operated candles, and twinkle lights to make your house feel cozy.
Prepare a playlist and make sure it will last for the duration of your party
Avoid harsh fragrances from candles and plug-ins that can give your guests a headache. Consider using diffusers and essential oils to make your house smell good instead!
Even if you are not hosting a meal, it's nice to provide a few drink and snack options.
Make sure your house is a comfortable temperature and monitor this throughout the party.
2. Be prepared
Try to clean and decorate your house before the day of your party to avoid feeling overwhelmed the day of the event. I also suggest getting yourself dressed and ready well before the start time so when your guests arrive you aren't rushed or have to leave to finish your hair and makeup. If you are providing a meal make sure it is going to be ready in time so your guests aren't waiting. I recommend time blocking a to-do list for the day of your party!
3. Make a good first impression
The first impression begins when your guests are trying to find your house, so make sure your house numbers are well lit and it's clear that your house is where the party is at. You should also take time to clean the walkway to your front door of any spider webs, snow, etc. When your guests enter the party be sure to greet them and give them a basic tour of where they can put their belongings, bathrooms, etc.
4. Provide entertainment
Think about the flow of your party from the time of the first guest to the end of the party. While an itinerary isn't always necessary, it's a good idea to have a few things planned in case people get bored of mingling. Games and activities can create a flow to your party and also help break the ice between guests who may not know each other very well.
Good hosting skills come with practice but I hope that these beginner tips help you feel confident in hosting people in your home. Have fun and remember that the main thing people will remember from your party is how you made them feel!
