In case you missed this post , I got a major closet upgrade! My husband and I installed the IKEA pax system wardrobe in our walk-in closet! Not only does it help keep my closet incredibly organized, it is also absolutely gorgeous! We keep joking that it is the nicest room in our house, lol! Before you check out that post, keep in mind that we have two closets in our bedroom so that’s where my husband keeps all of his clothes. He couldn’t care less, but he is getting his own closet makeover soon too. Can you tell I’m on a closet organization rampage?! I also organized our coat closet earlier this year and shared about it here.
Now let’s get into the 9 unique closet organization tips that are going to improve your closet and your life:
1. Update your closet space
It so much more motivating to keep a space organized and tidy when it’s aesthetically pleasing. Get rid of your dark and dreary closet by painting it a bright white, such as “pure white” by Sherwin Williams. Use this white contact paper to wrap your shelves. Take it to the next level with a fun peel-and-stick removable wallpaper accent wall!
2. Lighting
Make staying organized easier on yourself by ensuring you can actually see inside of your closet space. If you don’t have hard-wired light fixture in your closet I highly recommend these rechargeable light bars! You can set-up a motion detecting setting so they will come on as soon as you open your closet door.
3. Categorize
One of the reasons I love my IKEA pax system closet is because the different frames help me create zones for different clothing items. You can still achieve this organization system without the IKEA pax closet by separating your hanging clothes by color or by category. These velvet hangers are my favorite because they are non-slip and space saving since they are so thin. Ditch the plastic multicolor hangers! It’s insane how much of a difference coordinating hangers can make.
4. Accessories
Do not underestimate the power of organization accessories! These purse hangers are absolutely brilliant and these acrylic stands are perfect for anything you want to store on display, such as hats! These hexagon inserts are perfect for keeping small things separated, and I love that you can cut them to perfectly fit in your drawers. This kit comes with dividers for underwear, socks, and bras. Here’s a bonus closet organization tip: use command strips to secure these containers in place so they don’t slide around in your drawers. I purchased all of these linked items for my own closet and I promise they do not disappoint!
5. Labels
Although I love the look of the labels I made with my Cricut machine, it is definitely not necessary for getting beautiful labels. You can purchase custom-made labels on Etsy in so many different fonts and colors. An easier, cheaper alternative is this dymo label maker. This gold label tape is so unique, and I love the vintage look of these labels. An even easier labeling method is using a sharpie marker to write on washi tape. You can find so many fun and unique washi tapes from craft stores like Michael’s.
6. Temporary storage baskets and trays
This is a life-changing closet organization tip. The main thing that helps keep my closet clean and tidy is my basket for “in-between” laundry. I’ll throw anything that I want to wear again before washing in this basket and it prevents clothes from piling up on the floor. I also keep a jewelry tray on my dresser to hold my everyday rings, earrings, etc. This helps keep our bathroom counter tidy, and I’m not worried about my jewelry getting lost!
7. Hooks
Keep necklaces tangle free and belts in tip-top shape by storing them on hooks. I love the pull out hooks from the IKEA komplement line, but you could also use these chic self adhesive hooks. Do not settle for the basic plastic command hooks when there are so many aesthetically pleasing options! Back to tip number one, a closet that looks high-end will help you stay motivated to keep it organized!
8. Trash bin
This is another closet organization tip that is so simple, but makes a huge impact. Keep a trash bin in your closet for clothing tags, receipts, shipping packages, lint, etc. This trash bin is the perfect size to fit in a closet and comes in so many different colors. I got the pink one for my closet, and it’s the cutest little trash bin you’ll ever see! I know it sounds dumb, but you will seriously be amazed at how well this keeps your closet clean and tidy. I mean, duh, but you should have seen my closet b.t.b. (before trash bin).
9. Vertical storage
Use as much vertical space in your closet as possible. Try to fit more than one clothing rod on the wall, put a dresser below your hanging clothes, or hang shelves above your clothing rod. IKEA sells pull-out shoe shelves that allow you to fit several pair of shoes in a small space, or these hanging shoe shelves are great to hang behind doors. Just make sure to keep a foldable stool in your close to reach tall places. I love these foldable stools because you can tuck them away behind your clothes. We don’t want big bulky stools taking up space in our closets!
