The Best Christmas Cutout Cookies Recipe

December 11, 2021

In this post I am sharing the BEST Christmas cutout cookies recipe! I made these cookies for the first time in 2019 when I decorated cookies in the shape of diamond rings to ask each of my bridesmaids to be a part of our wedding. Those were the cutest, most delicious cookies I had ever made and I have been using the same recipe to make Christmas cutout cookies every year since!

The best part about this Christmas cutout cookies recipe is that the cookies are so soft! I like to make a royal icing to frost them because the icing gets a little hard and crunchy, which I think is a delicious contrast. Plus, royal icing is so fun to decorate with because it’s easy to draw little designs on your cookies like a face on a snowman, ornaments on a tree, letters, etc.

I found the original recipe for these sugar cookies here. This year I divided the recipe in half because I always end up with a ton of extra dough. Even though I halved the recipe this year, I still ended up with 2 small Pyrex containers of cookies to freeze. I plan on icing these closer to Christmas to take to our family Christmas parties. Below I have listed out the ingredients, directions, and my personal tips when making this Christmas cutout cookies recipe.

Christmas Cutout Cookies Ingredients

  • 1 cup softened butter – preheat your oven to 375 and place the sticks of butter on your stovetop to soften
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar (heaping)
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1.5 teaspoons almond extract – this is what makes the cookies sooo good!
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 cups of flour – 1/2 to 1 cup of this will be used when rolling out the dough

Christmas Cutout Cookies Directions

  1. Mix wet ingredients with sugar
  2. Add baking powder
  3. Slowly add flour *note you want the dough to be sticky. If you use too much flour the cookies can taste dry, but if you don’t use enough flour the cookies will spread when baking.
  4. Refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes
  5. Sprinkle a generous amount of flour on countertop and roll out dough
  6. Cut out cookies and transfer to parchment paper lined baking sheets
  7. Bake for 6 minutes at 375 degrees – cookies will continue to bake when you remove them from the oven. Make sure to remove before they start to golden. If you bake them too long they won’t be soft and chewy!
