Black Interior Doors with White Trim

July 25, 2022

Ever since we moved into our house 3 years ago, I have been working on painting nearly every inch of our house pure white by Sherwin Williams. The ceilings, walls, trim, and doors are all some finish of pure white. I typically paint our ceilings in flat finish, walls in satin finish, and trim/ doors in semi-gloss finish. I felt like our living room needed a pop of color and I thought black doors would tie in with our ceiling fan and fireplace. I was hesitant to commit to this paint project with the fear that I would also have to paint the trim around the doors too. How would I stop so I didn't have to paint the trim throughout the entire room? Spoiler alert: I kept the trim white. This post is all about painted black interior doors with white trim and before and after photos.

To paint the doors black I used the color Black 02 from the company Lick. I had never heard of this company until they reached out to collaborate on a few posts for Instagram. They are a UK based company that recently expanded the the US! I really liked how they only had a few shades of each color. Sometimes looking in the paint aisle can be really overwhelming so it was nice to only have a few options to choose from. They send you peel and stick samples and they are seriously identical to the paint! I ordered a few different samples of black and found that Black 02 was a true velvety black in my space. I highly recommend trying the peel and stick samples before ordering because you can really see how the color looks in different lighting.

My only regret with paining these doors black is that you can really see the scratch marks from where my dogs jump on the door. I know I should just train them not to do this, but we're too far gone at this point. I don't think it's the fault of the Lick paint since this also happened with the Sherwin Williams paint, it just wasn't as noticeable when they were white. I did choose a matte finish this time and I wonder if eggshell would have been more durable? At this point I'm just planning on touching them up as needed and I might look into a clear sealant paint as well.

Like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I was afraid I was going to have to paint the trim around the door black as well. I really wanted to avoid doing this in case I decide to paint the doors again in the future. Luckily, with the curtains covering the side trim you really only see the trim above the door and the quarter round on the floor. Personally the white trim doesn't bother me at all, but painting it black would definitely add more height to the space.

I love how the black doors ground the room and add a statement. It does make the room feel a little smaller and cozier, which is honestly great because this room is really big and spread out! Our gold accents really pop against the black as well, which is so fun.

I hope this post and the before and after photos were helpful if you're considering painting your interior doors black. Thank you so much for reading and supporting my blog!
