This fall I really wanted to step up the curb appeal of our home and I figured what better way than to decorate with lots of fall mums (and, of course, some pumpkins too)! I purchased two large containers and headed to the greenhouse to pick up the mums, otherwise known as chrysanthemums.
I really want to keep these flowers blooming all season long, so I did some research on how to take care of fall mums and I’m sharing everything I’ve learned in this post!
Did you know that mums are considered the “Queen of Fall Flowers” ? I love that because as soon as you start to see mums for sale and filling up on your neighbors front porches, you know it’s officially fall!
How to choose fall mums to buy
Although it is tempting to purchase beautiful blooming mums, it is best to buy the plants that are still mostly little buds because mums only bloom for about four to eight weeks. To encourage mums to produce more flowers, you should pinch off the dead flowers to allow for new growth. This is called “deadheading” your flowers.
How to plant fall mums
When transferring mums to a new container, you want to make sure it is large enough that the plant has room to spread and grow. Gently loosen the roots and plant in well draining soil. In my fall flower arrangement I added autumn grass for some added interest and height. You could also put mini pumpkins in your chrysanthemum arrangement!
How often to water fall mums
These flowers like soil that is moist, but not soggy wet. They need about an inch of water per week, with waterings every 1-3 days. Make sure not to let the flowers wilt between waterings and only water the soil (not the flowers) because they will turn brown if they get too wet.
Important tip:
Make sure to bring your chrysanthemum arrangements inside or cover them if it is going to frost!
