I know how overwhelming it can be to design a room from scratch. You might be thinking “where do I start” or “how do I find my design style?” If these thoughts sound familiar, you are in the right place! In this post I am sharing my step by step process for finding interior design inspiration and creating a design board.

Step 1:
Create a board on Pinterest for your room makeover. The reason I recommend creating a new board for each room is because Pinterest will start to learn your aesthetic and recommend pins based on your style. This is the easiest way to find interior design inspiration that is consistent!
Step 2:
Use keywords to search for your design style. Example: “boho bedroom”, “mid century modern bedroom”, “white bedroom”, “cozy pink bedding”, etc. Pin all of the images you like to your board. This is an easy way to figure out which interior design style(s) you are most drawn to.
Step 3:
Evaluate your pins and look for common trends. What colors did you pin most often? Are there any decor trends that you pinned repeatedly? Take note of the things you pinned the most and try to incorporate this into your design board. Most of the rooms I pinned are white with pops of peachy pink colors, plants, layered bedding, gold fixtures, and wood tones.
Step 4:
Now that you have an idea of your design style, close out of Pinterest! I know this can feel scary but trust me, you have the inspiration you need! When you spend too much time looking at the images you pinned, you will unintentionally end up copying these exact images. In my opinion, this is a mistake because your house will end up looking just like every other house on the internet. You still want it to feel like YOUR home and comfortable for your family.
Step 5:
Create a design board, otherwise known as a mood board, for your room makeover. This is where you will copy and paste images of items you plan to use to style your room. I use Canva for my interior design inspiration boards. Canva is a free website, but I use the paid version for the background eraser tool that comes in handy when making these design boards.
Step 6:
Choose one item to start the design process! Use the color pallet you came up with from your Pinterest search. For this specific design board, I started with a rug to build my design off of. I searched on RugsUSA and filtered by orange and pink. I found the perfect rug to start my design board and found coordinating bedding too!
Step 7:
Start pulling in other design elements from your Pinterest search. Many of the images I pinned had either large prints or a shelf with plants above the bed. I decided to search for a photo ledge so I could combine these two interior design ideas. I found a bamboo photo ledge from IKEA, which is perfect for bringing in some warm wood tones.
Design boards are a great way to practice defining your interior design style. I used to waste so much time driving around to different stores, looking for decor, and hoping that what I found turned out looking good together. Avoid disappointing returns and frustration by following the steps above to find interior design inspiration and create a design board!
