One of my favorite things about essential oils is how versatile they are! I started using them primarily to make my house smell good, but the endless DIY recipes and experiencing the benefits of the oils is what kept me buying more. This will be my fourth summer using essential oils and I’ve turned to them every year for sunburns, bug spray, and bug bite relief. This summer I’m excited to try using oils in my garden too! In this post I am sharing my favorite essential oils to use this summer and five DIY essential oil recipes to use all season long.

Ok, let’s start with my favorite summer essential oils:
Lavender
This oil is a MUST-HAVE for sunburn relief! Seriously, you have to make the DIY after-sun spray in the graphic below. The mix of the soothing lavender and the cooling peppermint on your skin will give you the best nap of your life after a long day in the sun.
Peppermint
This life hack will change your life: a drop of peppermint on the inside of your wrist when it’s hot AF outside. I figured this out a few years ago on the Fourth of July when I was sitting a baseball game waiting for the fireworks to start and seriously thought I was going to die of heat. I had a bottle of peppermint in my purse and tried it. Now I always keep a bottle with me in the summer!
Citronella
Ok, before you skip past this one because you hate the smell of traditional bug sprays and citronella candles – I need you to know that the actual pure citronella essential oil smells sooo much better. I received this oil for free as a promo and I was shocked when I actually liked the smell of it. I love to diffuse it outside on our deck and I’ll put a few drops on my dogs collars when we take them to the lake. A DIY bug spray recipe is in the graphic below!
Purification
Purification is a blend of citronella, lavender, lemongrass, myrtle, rosemary, and tea tree. I love to use this when I’m washing towels, swim suits, and my husbands sweaty work clothes. This oil smells so fresh and clean and really helps to remove any odors. I just add a few drops to to the washer after it fills with water. I’ll also put a few drops on wool dryer balls and put them in with the load of clothes in the dryer.
