Coat Closet Makeover and Organization

Prior to this coat closet makeover our closet was overflowing with junk and it was getting difficult to open and close the doors. Every time I had to get something out of the closet it would instantly irritate me, so it was definitely time to tackle coat closet makeover! My goal was to make it as organized, yet aesthetically pleasing as possible. Read below to find out exactly what I did!

Start with a clean, fresh space

The first step to this coat closet makeover was to remove everything and decide what to keep/ donate/ and throw away. Once everything was cleaned out I decided to paint the inside white to match the rest of our home. I ended up wrapping the shelves in white contact paper rather than painting them to avoid paint chips when pulling things off of the shelves. This made the closet feel so much cleaner and created a fresh space to start organizing!

Create functionality

I decided that the bypass doors were really not ideal for this space and that it would be much more functional with bifold doors. This way you can see everything at once rather than only being able to see half of the closet at a time. We realized (a little too late) that the doors we purchased and painted were too large to fit our closet. My husband ended up trimming off the ends with a table saw he rented from Home Depot to make them fit. *Make sure to watch my YouTube video linked at the end of this post if you are thinking about switching your bypass doors for bifold doors.

Organize

I used these clear bins to organize all of the items that were scattered on the shelves before the closet makeover and I made custom labels using my Cricut machine. I love that everything now has a specific place and I can see exactly what’s inside! These shoe mats from amazon can fit 2-3 pairs of shoes each and they’re perfect to hold the shoes we tend to throw on just to walk the dogs or work in the yard.

Make the space work for your needs

After decluttering and organizing, I ended up with an entire extra shelf of space to use. This was the perfect spot to create a landing space using these small bins for my purse, keys, sunglasses, etc. I’m leaving the extra space open for our guests to put their things when they come over.
