We have been working on our backyard makeover for 4 years! Every summer we would tackle one big DIY project to save money. Now it's finally finished and it's been so nice to be able to enjoy it! This post is all about our DIY backyard makeover on a budget.

The first summer after we bought our house we painted our deck with the leftover paint that was used on the exterior of our house. My only regret from doing this is that the floor boards get SO hot and the paint chips easily. This year I purchased this mat to cover the chips and protect my feet and the dogs' paws from the hot deck floor. Since our outdoor rugs get ruined and need replaced each year, this mat was a much more affordable option and I have been really happy with it so far! I wrote about my deck decorating tips and where I bought everything for our deck in this post.
The next summer I got really into the idea of gardening and we built 4 raised garden beds! This has been such a fun hobby for me each summer and I wrote this post all about why you should start a garden. If I could redo this project I would have built the garden beds at waist height so I don't have to bend over so much. Plus it would also prevent my dogs from getting into the garden beds, which tends to be their favorite place to lay when it's hot out. This summer we actually added a herb garden wall and I shared all of the details in this post!
Last summer's big backyard makeover project was staining our fence. You can read all about that project in this post. This made a huge impact on the overall look of our backyard and was totally worth the hard work that went into this project. I highly recommend staining an old fence as a way to makeover your backyard on a budget!
This summer to wrap up our DIY backyard makeover we planted lots of perennials and added a rock landscape border around our fence. Every time I look out of our windows into our backyard I can't believe how much better it looks compared to last year and I can't wait for all of the flowers to bloom! I decided to purchase the perennials from Home Depot after I learned you can replace any dead plants at no extra charge with a receipt! Hopefully I won't have to take advantage of that warranty offer, but it makes investing in plants less intimidating since they can be really expensive! We ordered a delivery of river rock from a local landscaping company and this was so much cheaper than buying bags of rock from the store.
I hope this post gave you some DIY backyard makeover ideas on a budget. Thanks for reading!
